NTCOSS Welcomes Action on Methamphetamine 24th March 2015

The NT Council of Social Service Inc (NTCOSS) welcomes the announcement by the Chief Minister to establish a Parliamentary Committee to investigate the prevalence and impacts of ice use in our community as well as current government responses.

‘Several of our member organisations have expressed concerns about the emerging impacts that Methamphetamine is having on the community, these organisations report that they are seeing a sharp rise in the number of people accessing their services for methamphetamine use.’   NTCOSS Executive Director, Wendy Morton said ‘we are very pleased to hear the announcement today and we look forward to contributing to the investigation.’

Different treatment and facilities are required to support Methamphetamine users and current services need  the resources required to deliver best practice models of care.

‘Amity Community Services support the initiative and looks forward to assisting and providing input. We believe a comprehensive plan needs to be developed which includes prevention, protection and intervention. This is a very welcome announcement as we are seeing an increase in demand relating to methamphetamine use’ said Bernie Dwyer, CEO Amity.

‘Banyan House has experienced an increase in the numbers of people entering our rehabilitation services for methamphetamine treatment over the past 12 months. We are very supportive of the Chief Minister’s initiative and will support all efforts of the parliamentary committee.’ said Chris Franck, ED Banyan House.

We commend the NT Government for taking a proactive approach to this issue and for looking at what lessons have been learnt in other jurisdictions.
