Media Release – 22 June 2010
Our children must be protected
The Northern Territory Council of Social Service (NTCOSS) today welcomed the release of the Department of Health and Families Submission to the Enquiry into Child Protection in the Northern Territory.
“The Northern Territory Government has provided a strong basis for moving forward by acknowledging that the system is fundamentally flawed” said NTCOSS Executive Director, Wendy Morton, today.
“This paves the way for the design of a new system which will better support children in their basic right to safety.”
“The department has identified the critical need to work more closely with the NGO sector to ensure that children are adequately protected. A more effective partnership will provide greater support to children across the whole spectrum of the child protection system.”
“It’s time for the NT Government to make a clear statement that child protection is its number one priority, and to back this up by investing all necessary resources.”
We look forward to the recommendations from the inquiry.
