2030 Plan points the way ahead
The Northern Territory Council of Social Service (NTCOSS) today welcomed the release of the Northern Territory Government’s Territory 2030 Strategic Plan.
“We applaud the government for identifying the critical need in areas such as housing, public transport and Indigenous disadvantage” said NTCOSS President Mr Bernie Dwyer, today. “We are also pleased to note the identification of the need to address key public health concerns such as the damage caused by alcohol misuse in the Northern Territory.”
“While we recognise the government’s commitment in principle to addressing these and other important issues, we look forward to seeing specific budget allocations to demonstrate the government’s preparedness to commit the resources necessary to achieve these targets.”
NTCOSS particularly acknowledged the level of detail that has been provided in the identification of targets in the health and education sectors, and encouraged the government to provide the same level of detail in respect to its intentions for housing and public transport.
The plan highlights the importance of planning for the development of the new City of Weddell, to ensure that services and infrastructure will be in place to meet the needs of the residents of the NT’s newest city.
The ideal of living sustainably in an environmentally responsible manner is also captured by the document, and NTCOSS is keen to see the government ensure that low-income earners are given every opportunity to play their part.
NTCOSS supports the prominence given to education and life-long learning, particularly as a means to improve the desperate circumstances of Indigenous Territorians living on remote communities.
“We are keen to see the detail on how government intends to achieve these targets, and we look forward to meaningful consultation with the community sector.”
“NTCOSS calls on the broader community, in particular the business and education sectors, to endorse this plan and join the community sector in working to create a just and prosperous Territory. Long term planning must be above party politics.”
“The Territory 2030 plan is a step in the right direction” concluded Mr Dwyer.
