New grog group will save lives and money

The NT Government has today taken a purposeful first step in confronting the scourge of alcohol and drug misuse across the Northern Territory.

Minister for Health, Kon Vatskalis, has announced a one-off grant of $50,000 to help establish a peak body for community service organisations working in the field. The Northern Territory Council of Social Service (NTCOSS) welcomed the announcement, noting that the new body makes good economic and social sense.

“Alcohol and drug misuse costs the Territory millions of dollars each year through accidents, illnesses and absences from work,” said NTCOSS Executive Director Wendy Morton today. “It also contributes significantly to the assaults and the domestic violence incidents which cause so much human misery for Territorians.”

Alcohol and drugs are used at more dangerous levels in the NT than anywhere else in Australia, with Territorians drinking alcohol at a rate of almost twice the national average. Currently, the NT is the only Australian jurisdiction without an alcohol and drug peak body.

A properly-funded peak body will have the capacity to provide policy advice, analysis and research, and become a single point of reference for government and other key players. It will also offer training and development for those working in the sector, so that services can be delivered most effectively.

“We applaud the NT Government for this investment in the Territory’s future, and we look forward to their continued support as we work to alleviate the worst excesses of alcohol and drug misuse across the NT,” said Ms Morton.

Further financial support is needed to ensure the future of a strong peak body. ‘We will be seeking assistance from all levels of government, and from the corporate sector,” said Ms Morton.

“Ultimately, a drug and alcohol peak body will save lives and money.”
